Professor Nagib du Toit has headed the Ophthalmology Division of the University of Cape Town / Groote Schuur Hospital since 2019. He completed his undergraduate training and internship in Cape Town, before commencing his ophthalmology career in the UK, where he became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
He completed his postgraduate training at UCT and was appointed to a consultant post in 2004. He completed his ophthalmology MMed in 2006 and in 2016, he graduated with a PhD in ocular trauma. He has served on the South African Glaucoma Society (SAGS) Executive Committee (2012-2020) and the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa (OSSA) Executive Committee (2017-2019). He is a member of the College of Medicine of South Africa’s (CMSA) ophthalmology council, which regulates post-graduate (resident/registrar) training in South Africa, and he is the lead examiner for glaucoma.
He was made editor-in-chief of OSSA’s South African Ophthalmology Journal (SAOJ) in 2017 and together with the editorial team, transformed it into a peer-reviewed, DHET-accredited journal with Google Scholar listing. He has also had papers published in international and local academic journals. He has presented academic papers at national and international ophthalmology conferences.
He helped establish and serves on an NGO which functions as a non-profit organisation (NPO) (and is a registered public benefit organisation) to assist the state in dealing with its long cataract waiting lists. Cataract surgery has been offered to non-medical insurance patients on a cost-recovery basis and free of charge to indigent patients, since 2017.
