A/Prof Gavin Tan is the Head of the Surgical Retinal Department of the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC); the Vice Chair for Strategy, Innovation, and organisational transformation; and the Head of the Ocular Diagnostics Department. He is a visiting senior consultant at the KK Women and children’s hospital, the biggest maternal and child hospital in Singapore where he pioneered the establishment of the paediatric retina service. He also played a pivotal role in founding the country’s first ocular oncology and brachytherapy service. He also holds appointment as a clinician scientist at the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) and as an Associate professor with the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School. In addition, A/Prof Tan is the Clinical Director of the SNEC Ocular Reading Centre (SORC), where he spearheaded the development of Singapore’s diabetic retinopathy (DR) telemedicine screening program and successfully integrated the artificial intelligence into DR screening. His primary research focus is on diabetic retinopathy in which he has secured major grants in multimodal imaging in retinopathy, as well as the use of AI and deep retinal imaging to explore the eye as a window to diabetic complications. 
A strong advocate for digital health and innovation, A/Prof Tan has developed telemedicine-based virtual imaging clinics and digital solutions aimed at enhancing patient care.
